Half-life 2 installation help

Ok,my friend has hl2 and whenever he trys installing it he has to put in some kind of code.He doesn't know what the code is because he got the CD from someone he knew and i don't think he can call up that person.Any help on what to do?(im posting this for him because I think you guys would know what to do)

not necessarily pirated, if it was pirated he'd probably have a fake key anyway or something, he could have just gotten the disc though and no case.

If he got given the CD by someone else, the other person has obviously used it, and have no need for the disk anymore. The disk is useless to another person. The key has been used once, and it cannot be used again, because it is linked with the original owner's steam account. Tell him to give the CD back.

you can still play singleplayer even if you can't link it to steam.
Also sony they usually come with the game somehow, but I'm not gonna say anymore because I'll be banned for piracy.

no i did not pirate this. my neibor gave me a bunch of games he beat and dosent want anymore. he didnt give me the manuel wich had the code on it. i tried to get it to work but every time i click the icon it brings up the steam website and i have to register it to on steam to play it. what should i do?
