I'm not in a very high grade right now but the 2nd sentence is completly true.

Yes, but English teachers (or at least my one) are usually freaking perfectionists.

Why didn't you just ask the teacher to write out a note stating that the grade was incomplete...? You're mum seems strict, yet, but it is on reasonable grounds in this situation. It would have been wise to just wait. I'm sure she only wants the best for you; Otherwise she probably wouldn't have reacted as she did.  :o
