Author Topic: Rendering a CD unreadable  (Read 7303 times)

Hey folks. I need to more or less render a large batch of CDs unreadable. I figure the best way of do this is to take a key and just make a grid of scratches all over the read side of the CD. Will this do the trick?

Sandpaper.

The lower the grit, the better.

and why do you need to do this?
also use fire.

Make scratches along the grooves with your key. Or, dunk them in orange juice and scrub hard. Or put it in the microwave.

I figure it's a fairly good practice in this day and age to attempt to destroy any vaguely personal information that you're done with.

Also, would a hole punch to pit surfaces in the read side work?

Just use fire, a propane torch will make it completely unreadable.

or rape it, atleast it'll be scarred for life  :cookieMonster:

If you want to make the data unreadable, scratching the surface won't do. The inner side is the information, it's mostly clear plastic. You'd have to break them and such, melt.

1. Hammer
2. Hard surface
3. Place disks on said surface
4. Smash away with the hammer
5. Obligatory ???
6. Obligatory profit

If you scratch the polycarbonate side enough, it won't reflect properly. Take it outside, put the data side on the ground and rub it on the sidewalk for a few minutes.

I know, but my point is the data is still there through the messed covering. If he feels so serious to destroy the information, I think he should get the whole thing wacked. There's methods around the forgeted up covering.

Obviously someone who specialized in data recovery could get data off a scratched CD, I just want this destroyed enough that some garbage man isn't going to pick my old CDs out of the garbage and pick through them for the lulz.

I don't think they could do anything with the love tapes, Sirrus.
