How do you do that with steam games?

Go to your steam application folder:
Steamfolder/steamapps/common(or your username but i guess common/gamefolder(KOTOR probably)/KOTOR.exe
Set compatibility to XP, let it run as adminstrator.
That's what i have. :D

Should it still not work, then i don't exactly know.

I'm having an error every time I play KotOR as well, although I'm not sure it's the same one you have.

Crashes in the middle of the tutorial every time but I can't recall the error message it gives.
