I was considering this too actually.  I just have 2 problems:

1.  How do I download Ubuntu by using a disk?

2.  I have some rather expensive programs like photoshop and office but I lost the cd, will they be compatible with Ubuntu if they were from Windows and will I be able to transfer them to the new OS over a flashdrive?

From what I heard (One person saying this to me over FA) You can keep your old programs, but newer/rarely used/less known ones might not really work.
