Quest to the West

Two teams, one mission. Build a Minecart track as far west as possible from a starting location.

About
So this is an idea that's been floating around in my head for a few weeks and I thought it was about time to put it into motion. I wanted to create some sort of challenge that would test minecraft players as well as making them work together to create something great. This is what I've come up with.

Rules
  • MUST own MineCraft Alpha.
  • Players CANNOT modify the other teams tracks.
  • Players have to build at least 3 straight tracks after any curved track.
  • Players must build a curved track after 10 straight tracks.
  • Players can place Obsidian blocks on up to two sides of the other teams tracks. After these have been placed, the cannot be moved. Teams cannot build over or under Obsidian.

Current Objective

"Netherway" and "Union Pacific Railroad Company" are the two teams. Pick your team. Server will start within two days. If you haven't joined by the time it starts, you are still able to join, but I choose your team to keep things fair. I'll have a list of the teams below.

Other Notes
Here's just a few other things I thought I'd mention:
A small disclaimer, I  will be the final judge of what the team names will be.

Also, I'll update the OP with changes and updates. This will include rules, which team is winning and so forth.

Last thing, I'd like to provide a prize for the winning team, though I'm not sure how. I don't feel like spending boatloads of money on a ton of people buying them each $10 steam games or whatnot. So until I can think of a better prize (Or if someone can suggest one to me), then I don't think there will be prize. Just bragging rights.

will they have to mine materials themselves or will you grant tracks and other things to them?

You could:
Make a large barrier and turn off mobs
prize?
each player gets a different prize
a twist:
cannot go straight for more than 10 tracks
must either go down, up, sideways, or a jump(jump not recommended since it is handicapingly stupid)

They'll have to do everything from scratch.

inb4MCEdit

I'm not too familiar with MCEdit, I thought only admins could use it on a server.

inb4blocklanders/robloxians

They'll have to do everything from scratch.
Will they be allowed to sabotage the other tracks? Because that would be +5Awesome

The twist is good, I'll add that to the OP.

I was wondering if I should turn off mobs or not, though I think it's best if I do turn them off.

I already mentioned prize in the OP. I'm not sure how to pay for it or whatever. It'd be best if there was no prize, just people playing for fun and bragging rights, but I want people to take it seriously and have some motivation.

I don't think so. That would mean nobody would get anywhere. But you should be allowed to use your tracks to cut off their tracks so they have to go around or over or under your track or something.

Another twist-

If players can get obsidian, they may place two blocks on two sides of the other players tracks, forcing them to build around them.

To balance it, they can only do it every 25 tracks. Also, they cannot place tracks going on top and over it.

Say a team does this and the only possible way to build is left, and a tree is right next to it. They have to spend valuable time eradicating the tree to get through.

Very good. I like this a lot.
