I want to see how many people on here believe in, do not believe in, and/or use hypnotism, and why.

Thank you, JJA0, for pointing this out: YOU MUST AGREE TO BE HYPNOTISED. NOBODY CAN HYPNOTISE YOU WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION!

If you're thinking "BUT HYPNOTISM IS EEEVIIILLLL", you're wrong. It's not voodoo magic, it's just one small secret... Getting people so relaxed that they will believe things you tell them.

NOT EVERYTHING.

If they would not do said action normally, they will not do it while hypnotised. If you tell your subject that they must go into the street and dance around naked, they'll snap out of it and say "OH, HELL NO." If you tell them that one arm is warm, the other is cold, they will probably feel that!

Who makes a good subject?

One general rule fits here: The better you know them, the harder it is to hypnotise them. It's still possible, but just harder.

on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best subject:

1. Parent, or very very close friend:
2. Sibling, or someone much older than you
3. Friend, or someone a little younger than you
4. Friend of a friend
5. Don't know at all

How does one get someone else hypnotised?

1. Get them comfortable, probably lying down if it is your first time.
2. Use an induction. (I will explain later.)
3. Tell them things to feel.
4. Awaken them, and ask what it was like! (optional, obviously)

That's it. That's all you have to do. But step 2 is the most important. Choosing your induction.

An induction is... hmm. It's hard to explain. You can have them imagine things happening, them being somewhere (peaceful, seeing as though you're trying to get them relaxed.) Here's an example (but usable!) induction.

Quote from:  (INDUCTION ONE - WARM WATER)
*Have them lay down for this.*
You are laying on a beach. You hear the waves gently rising and lowering on the shore...
As you breath in, the waves rise... As you breath out, they lower...
They rise more than they lower every time you breath in...
*When subject breathes in, say each of these.*
The water comes nearer, and nearer...
And closer...
Until...
It is touching your toes...
The water is warm...
Then, it engulfs your feet...
The water makes you feel warm, and safe...
It comes over your legs...
It's as if the water is protecting you...
Then, up to your stomach...
And the water is very heavy, preventing anything under your stomach from moving...
then it moves up to your arms, making them feel warm...
Then, it's all the way up to your neck... and you cannot move any of your body...
Your whole body is limp...
Yet you can feel the warm water...
And when I count down from 5 to 0, the water will be gone...
But you will still have the warm feeling of it all over you...
5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

TL;DR?
Then you are obviously not patient enough for hypnotism.

Either they were sarcastic or braindead

Both of which don't differ too much, Hypnotism is not real.

 IS TOO!!1

But really dentists used it back in the day when painkillers and anesthetic was hard to come around. You basically dream away, and all the pain turns into delightful thoughts and feelings.

Jesus, why do people make fun of this so much? I bet it's cause of one of the following:

  • They're scared of it
  • They don't accept new ideas
  • They watch way too many movies

or its because the idea of it makes absolutely no sense and it has never been legitimately proven to work.
