I have three P2310H's from Dell. They are 23", 1920x1080 monitors.
They are about 120 pixels shorter than the resolution of 1920x1200, but their aspect ratio is more suited to watching movies. Besides, at 6.2 millions pixels of real estate, I'm not really missing out on a marginally taller resolution.
I've heard from some autistic artistic people that having a smaller monitor with a higher resolution is better as it results in higher pixel density; but these are the same people that insult you if you didn't pay $200 extra for getting a IPS panel.
Don't be too concerned about "standards". Pick a resolution that suits you, and then find a monitor of an appropriate quality, size, and price.
