Any other suggestions, of is the 6870 the way to go?

I think you are confused. I said I am open to suggestions.
Not really, I just used the words wrong.

I meant to say "Why did you say that to Steve, but not Devil?"

Because I am open to suggestions.

The abundance of incorrect information in this thread is astounding. Where to begin?

Nvidia are not always more expensive, but neither are they always more powerful.

The 6870 is not as powerful as the 5870. AMD has altered their naming scheme for the 6--- series and the 6870 is the new mid-range card whereas the 5870 is a high-end card from the 5--- series.

I'd recommend going with the HD5770 or perhaps the GTX 460. Both are powerful mid-range cards and are available at great prices right now. The GTX 460 outperforms the HD5770 in most cases, but the 5770 can be found for $30 less or perhaps more with holiday sales). If you are interested, you can follow the link below to see many performance comparisons between the two cards for a variety of games and benchmarks.

I never said the 6870 is as powerful, I said that it is close and that it has improved teselation. And the 6870 is better than the 460 in most cases for only 20ish dollars more

What about a 5870?

I have a HD5870, it is a powerful card. It's a little pricey and few games take advantage of that extra muscle, I'd go with the 6870 or the GTX 460.

Devil, I can't find any benchmarks comparing the 5870 to the 6870 so I can't say if it's "close". My instinct based on the pricing is that there is a significant performance difference.

Games are getting more graphic intense every year. I suggest preparing with a decent card. Instead of buying a
whole new one later, you can just pay a litter more and be supported for another (More or less) ~10 years.

Or not. Your choice. ;)

No computer will be able to last 10 years and still be decent

I have a 5870 and I agree that any game that isn't pretty new doesn't really get much use out of it, also I've seen some benchmarks and heard talk of it but we all know bench marks aren't always the best source

Not true. You can always upgrade parts.

If I were you I'd go the Nvidia route, from my experience, ATi sucks at updating drivers (or maybe I suck at looking for them) the 460 and 470 are awesome cards, and I think there's a 530 out? Or its coming out, not sure. Sadly, I'm still using a 270 ):

If by upgrading you mean basically replacing every part then yes, he said that using the same gpu would last 10 years. Also I agree drivers suck but I still love the performance of my ol' 5870

Oh, nah, that GPU will be outdated in 6-12 months. That's how it was when I bought DDR3 ram. Spent like 600$ on 12 gigs of it, and then 7 months later it would have costed 300$

Pfft. Get the 4850. It runs Starcraft II on ULTRA. It's less money.

I would download one.

Not Waste loving Cash On One.
