I'm just generalizing, Chinese is about as useless as Japanese, unless you work a job in either country or have close family that speaks it you're not going to be using it at all. Kids usually want to learn it because they "love Asian culture".

My girlfriend is Chinese, and speaks very fluent chinese, she speaks English just as good. And I'd love to be able to surprise her. And I've always loved the chinese characters. They are cool

You could say that about any language. They're all useless unless you plan on going to that country or have family that speak it. It sounds like you're just being biased.

Practically no one in America knows Russian, so you could call people anything you want and they wouldn't care. Either that or get a Heavy Russian accent so you can sound cool in movies :D
