Author Topic: So I need to start debating.  (Read 838 times)

Okay, might as well type this out, I don't really understand in what way the argument is constructed, or how much information I need, or anything really.
I love arguing so I'll help you out as a best I can. HOWEVER, I have never even seen a debate club or anything like that, this is just my two cents.

Learn these fallacies and call them out whenever someone commits one to decimate the opposition.

Now, if you want to learn about debate, start a religion thread or view previous ones. Arguments aren't hard, everyone can argue, but the key is to argue with eloquence and to support your side of the argument with facts, logic, and eloquence. Another key thing about debating/arguing, is that typically, there is no winner. The only way you can "win" a debate, is by destroying all of the opposer's points and causing them to either:
A. Ragequit, e.g. "WELL THAT'S WHAT I BELIEVE IN IT'S CALLED AN OPINION NURRR" (common religious argument)
or
B. Assimilate them to your side, e.g. "Oh, well it appears I am wrong." (IN WHICH CASE DO NOT WHIP YOUR richard OUT AND GO "LOL I TOLD U SO". It makes you look like a douchebag and a poor sport).
Most debates end in some sort of tie or treaty, or compromise.

Debating is not about who can yell the loudest or who can get the most emotional. It doesn't have to result in the debaters hating each other, either. I'd like to think I'm still friends with Illidan even though we argue a bit on the forum. Marcem's an idiot but I don't hate him. Also, to defend your point, you should come prepared with more than vague knowledge. Statistics are helpful, numbers are very convincing.

Finally, don't be an ass. Don't interrupt and start yelling. Learn to accept defeat, or learn to compromise. Debating is about convincing, not throwing a tantrum.

Do you have mass debating experience?
yar

Whatve you got a question about

This is pretty much how debates (oh how I hate them) are structured over here:

1: One side presents arguments for the point they're trying to make, other side follows suit
2: Refute arguments used by opponent in first round (first side goes first, then the other side again)
3: Rebuttal against what the opponents said in round 2, conclusion/summary of arguments.

Now I don't live in an english speaking country so I had troubly expressing this in the right words but I hope it helps.

Yeah that is all correct too. Show respect to your opponents and all that.

All true. Follow this and you'll be fine, Jaw.

Also, try talking to whomever leads or supervises the debate team, they should give you something to go by. Or try getting to a meeting; Watch one of their debates in person. You should know how their debate is formatted so that you'll be presenting properly.

Thanks all, looks like comr4de can help me here, locking for the moment.
