Author Topic: How Blockland has changed FOR you over time.  (Read 6650 times)

Blockland has changed me a lot.

In game: When I first found Blockland, Google-ing for sandbox games, I downloaded the demo and then bought the full version the same day. I think my first build was on the slopes, I used red 12x2x5's and 16x16 baseplates, I think. I didn't really build much in my early days. I began to roam around servers observing builds. I started to get better at building, just by observing. I quickly gained super admin on a certain server, because of my building skills, however I was tasked with building all of the small things. While this gave me a great deal of experience in many areas, I lost the ability to stay focused on a large project. I guess Blockland has changed from a building game, to a watch other people build while I hang out game.

On the forums: I think I registered for the forums the same day I bought the game. I started out thinking that people were the same as everyone else I knew; nice, easy to understand, and easy to beat in arguments. I was wrong however, and was treated harshly because of it. Then, I decided to be what I perceived  others to be, a jerk. I became part of that crowd. It is interesting, because back then, being a jerk was OK, however, a lot of people were nice. Now, I find it's just the opposite, everyone is hypocritical, they have an imaginary line of how mean you can be without cause. I find it weird because now it's not OK to be a jerk, but the community is generally meaner. The forums has changed from a place that I thought I owned to a place where I can have a logical conversation with someone.

Woohoo, V7 crowd representin'!

Blockland has changed a significant amount since those simple days.
I remember Space Guy's events, but even those were difficult to master, as well as the old GUI-JVS.  Even then the game had a different "feel" to it.  The community helped me greatly, and I soon was integrated into it.  I remember when Wedge taught me how to event with the new system that was brought about with V9, and hanging out with the MotE crowd to watch the clock explode in the bedroom, setting up bleachers and the like.

There's so much more, but to the point where I could write a book about it.

I remember joining in such late v9. My first server I went on, the admins were F8ing around so that they could get cheap kills. I called them all 'noobs' and proceeded to get banned for the reason, "Really, noob? You are a F-A-G-G-O-T."

I remember laughing when I realized the horse could carry weapons, creating the "bazooka horse."
Ah... the good ol' days in Slopes... not realizing how to use the numpad to place bricks...

why do so many people think im asking them how blockland has changed THEM?

I miss the days when I had first bought Blockland, I enjoyed the way it made me feel, to be able to create whatever I pleased. But then, my uncle in Pakistan bought me this awesome new laptop. I downloaded Blockland and by then i had forgotten my E-mail for my other BL so I just bought it again, then v9 was the new stuff and it just felt so, different. But, yeah, it is alot different.

I remember one of those portal servers, where chamber 3 was only a quarter finished.  :cookieMonster:

So let's go back before 1.0 and above.  Good ol' hacky RTB 1.045 and v0002.  Remember how laggy it was?  Wasn't that just fun?  So fun that RTB introduced the editor wand.  The thing that messed BL up for a while.  It was so cool being able to build something with perfectly sized bricks and make impossible structures.  It was like a multiplayer modeling app!  Also, we had some "great" deathmatches.  We shot at each other until the admin got too pissed off because he was being killed.  It sucked.  lots and lots of screenshots of 1.0 started coming out with its new design.  Lots of people hated it.  I, personally, loved it.  We were introduced to jello effects, emitters, culling, pseudo-physics destruction effects, and all that.  As it got closer to release, bones4 released some youtube videos of all of these things.  Also a few weeks before, badspot changed the player model to the rayman like guy we have today.  Then it was released!

In "retail", the game has changed a LOT.  You could go to a server and see either spam, or a quite neat build.  Sometimes there would be a default item dm or everyone driving around while two people built.  I guess the vehicle thing didn't really change.  one thing that did was how awesome the builds were.  Back then, you would see a box 2x2 (jello) house, and you would be blown away.

There was a also lot more originality with dms.  Remember pushbroom sumo and checkerboard dms?  Those were great.  Also remember Pload's Jail Break?  When you look at it now, it was hacky as hell.  Back then, we were blown away.  Now we have some really neat gamemodes with Space Guy's TDM.

Remember how amazed we were at the ramp bricks having proper collision?  That was great.  now we have proper custom bricks constantly being released!  Remember Propsys?  That was our old obj2blb.  I actually do prefer the default bricks over all of the new bricks coming out.  I guess I'm just a picky starfish in a way.  But what's with those damn pole bricks?  Since when have those been used in real lego builds how they are in BL builds?  Also, what's with custom colorsets?  I've never seen a proper red green and blue in one colorset.  Why are all greens so bright? Why are all blues so blue?  Why was this so cool back near release?  At least people stopped whining about the damn Editor Wand.

Also the server list kinda sucked.  You never knew who hosted it, you never knew what or who was in it.  Since 1.0, we've gotten color coding, names, and the web list.  Speaking of the web list, remember the old bloxel?  That was so amazing.  It was so unexpected and cool.  It didn't have any ray-tracing, and it looked way more like simcity.  What ever happened to those neat scripts that added some cool functionality anyway?  I guess Ephialtes made all of them we needed.  And what's with all of the people who make griefing scripts now?  I don't remember anyone doing that back near release.

tl;dr:  I ramble.

Does anyone remember the (I think this is what it's called) Maruchannel City RP? Yesyes, I understand that the word city and rp don't belong together but this was the first server I joined. I always went back. God, just thinking about it is giving me so much nostalgia. But I have to agree so much that the atmosphere has changed drastically, for the better or worse. I think I felt change alot was because I started modeling and little things can change big environments. I think if I could revisit those days with my knowledge and everything I'd do it a thousand times over. THE FEELING WAS JUST TOO GOOD.

Edit: I also remember how my first name was Mastur Cheev. Such a friend back then. Then again no one complained. Also, I remember when I joined Bushido's Hotel Tower thingy and he started being a friend (e.g. Spawning me over a ledge/spawning me next to him just to kill me) and banned me forever. I quickly got over my rage and completely forgot about it untill recently. Heh, he's come along way since then.

I have no knowledge of the original pre-retail Blockland, but even without it, I can tell something has changed.
Maybe it's just age. I started playing Blockland aged 13 or 14, and two years later perhaps I enjoy other things, an all too real tale for things I used to like that now either bore me or I can't find time for.

I remember first getting Blockland, happy to finally have my own key, and joining a community of under 7000, before events, physics and many of things a whole bunch of people including myself think nothing of at times. When I joined, if someone was annoying, it was a case of banning them for a while and solving things later, not resorting to drama flaming for several months until someone has the sense to end it.

If I could choose a time when Blockland was best it would be just after events came out in v8/9. Nearly everyone was nice, the new system combined with the ignorance of the users made everyone equal, just for a small period.

Some things have changed for the better, but the fact is that a couple of years ago I said I would play Blockland forever, a prospect which is to begin with flawed, although I planned to play for a long time. Now, in all honesty, I'm not so sure. Something's different that I just can't work out, somehow turning me away from the "good times" to other things.

Like I said before, if the whole inequality thing didn't happen, calling people noobs, banning them for no apparent reason etc., I'd enjoy the game more. I'm probably just jealous though, taking in the general ignorance of BL_IDs and reasoning thus:

"If he's ID 14k and I'm only 6k, then how come he is liked more, how come he can build better?"

Pitiful, "IDist", but true =(

Really, I think that Blockland keeps evolving over time, with no actual destination in mind.
Not positive change, not negative change, just change.

I agree.

I joined in v11, and I remember my first build on the slopes: a crappy, bright red demo house with two "floors". I had somehow skipped everything in the Tutorial past the "Build" area, so I didn't know crap.  I went from that to joining random City RPs. I learned some stuff, and one day went to Yorktown's and got addicted. I started a taxi/weapons business and fought off people whenever there was a riot.

Sigh... nostalgia.

I like it better now with the more advanced events and awesome mods; I figured out VCE recently and have been messing with making a Post-Apoca RP. However I never seem to finish a project before starting another, so who knows what I'll be doing in a year's time?

Letsee....

Noobitry:
Everyone on blockland starts out a little dumb to the community. I spent a really long time building some "hangout" entirely out of 1x1's. It was just a square building with a desk inside it. Someone came and cleared all of my bricks (And yes, I gave him admin). I told him that it took forever for me to build it. He said "Pfft, I could build that in 1 minute!", and left.

Understanding the game:
Now I realize, that could be done quickly! In fact, I went from building spam that no one wants to be around to building variable-using jail rps that everyone wants to crowd to :D I changed my view of blockland, I now want to build things that make the community happy.

Ah, v8.
Best of times c:
V8 was obviously the funnest of all BL.

Yet it was the worst gameplay wise.
