don't think it's necessarily required to learn with pencil and paper, but I did too, so idk, your call.
Depending on the industry your going into ignoring pen and pencil is really bad. For the most part if you Turn in a portfolio for a Jon in the entertainment industry they will always choose the person with strong line work over the nice speed paint. You can judge a person by how strong there line work is compared to a digital painting where there are multiple ways to reach the final product.
Basically line drawing is raw imagination, design,and skill comcompared to painting that is very suggestive.
