yawn

doin a little half-n-half

alright, so I need an opinion/technical help

I keep talking about this story I'm writing, as a matter of fact it moreso a cartoon
I already showed the preliminary drawings of the main antagonist's sword, now I've managed to draw the man himself
he's a shadow person with insane energy absorption powers and physical power rivaling saitama
his strength comes from the fact that he can absorb energy but can never release it, he's a black hole of sorts
the logic I've come up with concerning how he appears as a shadow person is that his absorption powers are so strong that he actively and subconsciously absorb all the light that hits him
the light congregates most around the eyes and the edges of his body, giving off a glow that isn't really a glow

enough context, here's the picture

the temple background is something I pulled off of google to test his effects on
it's supposed to look like everything about an inch around him is being sucked into his body, given that he's absorbing light, so that would distort his surroundings a bit
I applied a radiation blur to the photo, set the center focus to his chest, and traced the area of effect to be an outline of his body

how does it look? I think it looks good up top near his head but pretty icky down near his feet
should the blur be more gradual
also is there anything I should change about his design (he's staying a shadow person)

It's not working. It just looks like he's a laminated plastic cut-out in front of the background.
You should aim for something more like a dip in a water surface or gravitational lensing:

Basically, the effect needs to show a gradual increase in distortion as it approaches him, while the blur you're using goes full-force right from the edges.
Don't use a blur. Use some kind of warping filter, though I'm not exactly sure which kind.

Also, the places where he touches things should not have any warping, i.e near his feet, to give the effect that they're touching. Otherwise he looks like a cutout.

made some edits

I had to replace the picture because the blur was part of the picture
I couldn't find a tutorial on how to do a gravitational lens online so I traced out where the effect will take place, I also made some edits to his feet so it looks more like he's standing on the platform

that is bubsy you dumbo

help. i drew something. tell me what's wrong with it. there has to be something and creationism corner just says "its face"
