Besides, I'm not an amazing artist and have never tried to be one, so I can't really give him the advice he needs to improve the quality of his art.

cannot say that anything you posted was intended to not look hurtful or act as constructive criticism because none of it was. you stepped into this thread and stomped on someone's artwork, there's nothing else to it.
