those are boTH THE WORST POSSIBLE REASON

thats like, a flimsy madlibsian justification for a NES game, holy stuff

'this is buster the squirrel! one day, when he was out [WALKING HIS DOG/GROCERY SHOPPING/CROSSING THE STREET] his [GIRLFRIEND WAS CAPTURED/GIRLFRIEND WAS CAPTURED/GIRLFRIEND WAS CAPTURED] by an evil [WARLOCK/WITCH/WITCHLOCK], but then he discovered a [MYSTICAL METEORITE/HAUNTED TOP HAT/MYSTERIOUS MACGUFFIN] that gave him [INCREDIBLE STRENGTH/THE WISDOM OF THE ANCIENTS/EYE LASERS] and rushes to her rescue!'

like youre kiting around a character who is 100% defined by their background and personality, at least put some more effort in their design then 'none at all'
WELL IM NOT GOOD AT COMING UP WITH IDEAS OKAY
also half of that isnt even like anything like his story at all
there is no "girlfriend" or anything that was captured

if you think you're a master of this, then why don't you try coming up with a reason as to why he would have them?

wait, are you telling me that your oc is actually named buster the squirrel

also because me doing stuff for you doesnt help you forgetin learn anything you lazy stuff

if you think you're a master of this, then why don't you try coming up with a reason as to why he would have them?
He is not obligated to make a character for you

This is the general message you get if you got anything out of bushido's last long post

No, I'm just saying half the example stuff you gave doesnt even apply to anything
also because me doing stuff for you doesnt help you forgetin learn anything you lazy stuff
well what the forget am I supossed to "learn"?
you tell me "oh btw your ideas are stuff" and then dont give me any tips on how to make them better.
If you're going to complain about peoples OCs, its the least you could do if you actually care to see them not be bad.
He is not obligated to make a character for you
I'm not saying he should make my character for me, I just want him to give me tips as to how I should make it work so that it isnt dumb

Bushido has good ideas

they are just executed harshly

No, I'm just saying half the example stuff you gave doesnt even apply to anythingwell what the forget am I supossed to "learn"?
Instead of making "madlibsian justifications" for character building, work around traits that are based off of a story you want to tell. I feel like you just chose to give your characters magical powers based off of a single factor. (In this case the hat) the end result resembles a mismatched costumer trying desperately to explain why they're wearing what they wear.

you tell me "oh btw your ideas are stuff" and then dont give me any tips on how to make them better.
Bushido has typed up his two cents on what he thinks constitutes good charcter building, it's the reader's job to pull the information. It sure makes you think a bit more when you're trying to comprehend the lesson.

Try building your own world instead of using an already existed one, that allows for flexibility
This may help.

a "lesson" isnt good when you make it hard to understand the point of it no matter what

his lesson was easy to understand. you're the person who doesn't have what it takes to actually try to learn anything.

I do think understand it, but it doesnt make any sense
If I shouldn't base it around his background or personality, then what the forget should I base it on?
or is he saying I should do that?

amidst all this does anyone work with charcoal? i know its a great way to add dark values and depth but whenever i use it or try to mix it in with graphite it becomes a black sheet of paper

I tried charcoal in class one day

it was ok, interesting to work with but somewhat messy

amidst all this does anyone work with charcoal? i know its a great way to add dark values and depth but whenever i use it or try to mix it in with graphite it becomes a black sheet of paper
its super messy and gets on everything so no
when i traditional art i almost always use a regular no.2 pencil

I suggest compressed charcoal instead of graphite if you want more definite darker lines.

Yeah, I don't like it too much. In my experience, I can't quite get the darkness I want because I'm always trying to clean stuff up and it always takes away the stuff I put down onto paper. It was a little better when I had access to different kinds of charcoal at school. They had superblack level charcoal pieces.

I bough extra soft, medium, hard, compressed, and black chalk pastel, I can use them so well it's like I actually took a photo of my still life :D
