a minehole is nothing more then "creating" a new 10x10 cave ground anywhere you want.
once you step foot off the cave ground into a mined out tile, you better be under a support to continue digging.

Right, will keep that in mind one I find some more ore.

For now I'll go safe and hunt to get some more LP, I'm either going to get ranging or boost some skills since my highest 4 are only 15.

Work on raising your strength and smithing skill. How fast you mine is determined by strength * tool ql, and so far everyone's guess is that there's just a random requirement to mine places.
Ex, You can mine in your cave. You make a minehole. You can no longer mine because this layer/part of the layer needs a higher str * tool ql.

yeah i wasnt able to mine from our main iron mine till i had over 100 str and at least a q25 tool.

while no requirements were needed for another mine.

Well I've got a Q14 Pickaxe some bros gave me when I saved their friend from being mauled by a bear who broke his boat, and my strength is 56 with boosts, so I think I mine at a decent rate.

And I feel that Aurochen and Mouflon are harder to find in W4 than W3.
