I am confused. During the installation process, it defaults to 17GB of used memory, but there is a dropdown that you can change. Does this use up a variable amount of memory? why?

So I finished download, and I'm running it now, and I can clearly see why some people like it and others do not. I will start by saying that Ubuntu seems very smooth and I like the workspaces thing, but It just doesn't seem to work as well so far. It does not have complete mousepad support (I got desktop version, I did not see a separate laptop one) and seems to be trying to sell me things. During the download process, I got a few glitchy screens while Ubuntu ran for the first time, and the login box did not seem to work right. Many keys on my keyboard also are not supported, but Ubuntu looks promising, and I will try to stick with it until I decide for good. Right now, Windows 7 seems to be better by a longshot.
