What is the point of clans?

I've had "clans" before, but they were just generally formalising a collection of people.
The only true purpose towards clans that I see, or am interested in, is those which are based around a group of friends and people you can get on with, playing together, doing things and having fun, for the sake of having fun and being together.

I hate how clan wars and battles that involve in game fighting are looked down apon, its fun but I don't know why everyone hates it. (or almost everyone that actully is important.)

Some people like to be part of a group with a topic because it feels more official. Being part of and representing a clan is half the fun.
