How to fix the purple and black checkerdbox textures in garrys mod.

Ok,so most stuff i see on some servers are purple and black checkerdbox,and i was wondering if i could fix this without having to buy a new game like CS:S. I was on this one server and some guy told me to download or do somthing about GCF? What is he talking about? I searched it but i still don't understand what he meant.
