A drug is any narcotic that affects your central nervous system. Marijuana is a drug. To be more exact, it's a stimulant. A stimulant is anything that stimulates the brain. IE: Something that makes you think or feel differently, like anesthesia.

learn your drugs, stimulants increase the speed of the body's activities. stimulants are drugs like cocaine and methamphetamines.
THC is closer to a downer, in relations to anything, because in higher amounts it slows down the systems, though THC really doesn't fall under anything.

Marijuana = legal, but monitored in the same way as Alcohol. Age limit, etc

Every other nasty drug = 100% illegal (still)

Eh, I think everything should be legal, just people should be educated properly about it.
Addiction should be treated as more of a community issue, than anything.

If marijuana truly has no lasting side effects, why is it so widely thought to be a harmful drug? I have a hard time believing that all of the sudden it is perfectly fine to smoke.

It isn't, that's the result of the "War On Drugs" propaganda that's been plaguing the USA since it was started. They flat-out lie to children in anti-drug programs. That sounds like conspiracy bullstuff but it's absolutely true. Cannabis is virtually harmless.
