Fallout New Vegas: DLC Help

So, I haven't really bought a DLC before for a Steam game, and since today I just bought the first one for New Vegas, how do I know if it has installed?

Just some quick pointers would be helpful.

Start game>Data files>Look for the name of the DLC. It should be a .esm or a .esp.
And with most official DLC you usually get a quest/items or something when you enable it.
