Desu can mean:

* A Japanese copula (です), or word used to grammatically link a subject and predicate; often translated into English using the verb "to be"

It's also a sentence ending you use in Japanese in order to be polite. However, for things like "kawaii desu", it would be "to be".

Agreed. When I watched episode 1 and it went all trippy and weird, I was all like "oh god wtf just happened"

...but I continued watching it and even put it on my laptop in the vein hopes I'll get time in class to watch more of it. I'm already at episode 5...
