I am thinking of getting this $500 netbook to replace my laptop.

The Intel Atom processor is a dual core with hyperthreading (a pseudo-quadcore if you will), and an Nvidia ION2 (short for 2nd generation Nvidia ION graphics)

I've looked up the reviews of this netbook and found that most benchmarks point to the CPU being a bottleneck for the ION2.  However, I'm also planning to throw in $50 to add in 4GB of RAM, maybe 2GB if I feel it isn't necessary.

Does anyone have any experience with the ION2?  Or do you have another laptop that you can recommend for me that is $500 or less?
This laptop must:
  • be at least 1366x768 in resolution
  • have a webcam and microphone built in (0.3 megapixel minimum)
  • be using any Intel processor
  • have at least two physical cores
  • have an onboard dedicated video chip (Nvidia preferred, highly)
  • have Windows 7 (Home Premium minimum)
  • be a small laptop, no big screens or whatever.
  • MUST be able to at least handle some graphics, i.e. TF2, Civ4, Minecraft, etc.

The nVidia ION 2 is based off the nVidia GeForce GT210 chipset, meaning you'll probably be able to do TF2 and the like just fine, as well as Minecraft (but I dunno about Civ4, never played it before so I dunno how intensive it'd be, it'll probably do fine I'm assuming).

Its decent, you'll be able to run most of those games, civ probably not on maxed out graphics.

My Mom has that same netbook and loves it.

That processor isn't so good.

But, you probably won't find a better laptop for that price. I am looking around right now, though.

I found one with a better processor and bigger hard drive, but with a stuffty graphics card.

Oh, and mind you, it isn't a looker.

That's actually horrible compared to the one Gen. Nick posted to begin with.

- Lower battery life
- Bigger
- No dedicated GPU, probably will have a hard time running even TF2
- The SL (and all other) series of ThinkPads are meant for business use, not gaming

I'm not the best with picking out computers, maybe I should go away now...

Well, at least you realize it.

Civ4 is not intensive at all, its less demanding than Minecraft and TF2 so it will likely run (which is very good).

I'll remind you that the Intel Atom in this netbook is dual core with hyper threading.  Meaning two threads are fed into the core instead of the typical one.  Meaning its got two physical cores and two virtual cores, hence a pseudo quad core.

I do that all the time, lol.
