Heres what I would do, get in some anti-nuclear bunker (They have those already) wait out the fighting, when they say the radiations gone I will go home and have a look around.

You've probably built houses before.

You don't have to live in the woods to go hunt in them. The animals might come into the city and run around there. (see: I am Legend)

Okay, well, maybe you'd move if you live in New York or some big city, but you don't have to live in the woods.
