Author Topic: Ten Seconds till Mars - A Space Roleplay  (Read 3152 times)

"Tee minus ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. We have liftoff." The crewmembers at mission control clap and cheer loudly as the Hummingbird lifts from the platform and begins the first manned mission to Mars. The twenty-two person crew would have to endure one-hundred and sixty-five days in space to Mars, but would arrive to a pre-built biodome, constructed by drones from previous Mars missions. They had made a breakthrough.

Fifty years later, there were regular trips to the red planet. In fact, there were now one-person shuttles and cruise ships to and from Mars. But with every great thing humanity creates, they must ruin with war. It started with China and Russia's territory dispute after the Russian Empire formed and took over much of Asia and Africa. They shot down eachothers satellites, sabotaged some space missions, minor stuff. But then Japan got into the mix. They said American spies had stolen their blueprints for a new space shuttle. They started using their missile satellites and rained hell upon the U.S. Weapons were being rigged onto larger shuttles for space combat. The ISS was shot down, but the current five American crew members got out safely. Another space station was launched under the US's name. This time it was named the Second to None. A combat station. A small hangar with two fighters, multiple missile launchers, and hand-aimed telescopic cannons. World War Three had begun. Except it wasn't just our world. Two worlds, and the space inbetween.

A space combat themed roleplay. Think China and Russia are now the world powers. Japan is pretty much destroyed, and America is in ruins, other than their Mars bases. Russia controls the moon, Africa and the Americas. China controls Antarctica and Asia. America pretty much controls mars. Alright. Here's the character sheet.

You do know that if Russia controls America and America controls mars then Russia controls Mars right?

shouldn't it be 30 seconds?

No Jetlok I got the name from the band but I changed it because I can.

Freeze, by Americas I meant North and South America.

#?x? cool idea.
guess ill play.

The crew quarters were hot and muggy, lit by dim red lights placed on the celling and walls. soldiers talked, wrote, and played games for hours on end, the only interuption to this schedule being the food arriving 3 times a day. I was one of the only crew members with acess to anything outside that room. the rest of the ship was almost an exact oppisite of the barracks where I slept. it was a maze of clean, streamlined corridoors, lite with bright white lights. other engineers and officials paced the halls, almost rubbing in to me their superior conditions on the ship. apperantly, some cooling unit error had caused the barracks to overheat, and I was being sent to fix it. I imagined what it must be like as I boarded the elevator. the barracks were always a little hot, sometimes annoyingly so. but with a cooler malfunction.... I stepped out into the engine room, and immediatly saw the problem. the unit had litterly fallen over, disconnecting it from the pipes leading to the barracks. it hefted my tooolbox and got to work.

EDIT: I finished this

The hum of the ship's central components was pure bliss to me. My eyes sharply brown townyzed the computer in front of me as I monitored Daudelus' main functions. My fingers constantly type away, keeping everything in alignment. Suddenly bold, red letters appeared on the console. "Got another error guys! Why are we running this piece of stuff Aidos software anyways?" I exclaim as I attempt to debug the error. "Great we just lost temperature moderation in the crew quarters. Get your heads out of your asses and help me here!" I bark orders as I furiously search for a solution.

Xavier sighed. He hated AIDOS Operating Systems. Anyways, that wasn't the task at hand. He pulled up the comms panel in the weapons control room, punching in the Dadelus's serial number. Someone by the name of Takisha answered; he sounded mad. "What the HELL do you want?" "Calm down. When's your clunker supposed to arrive? I need to know so we can have a docking port open. Also, tell your captain that we'll need a Dee-Ess on when you guys are arriving."

After a few hours of hard work, and with some help from the tech team on deck 6, I reconnected the cooling unit. It was nothing but satisfying to see something that was lying on the floor broken an hour ago was now in perfect condition. Then I grabbed up my tools and got back on the elevator up to the crew quarters. I got a warm welcome back in the barracks, being hailed as a hero for fixing the cooler. for the first time all year, the barracks was cooler than 80 degrees farenheight.
after a some time passed, we were informed that we were approaching mars, and should be deployed in one day. the crew shouted with joy untill they heard the reports coming from the surface weather stations.
" Attention, soldiers. the current temputure is 110 degrees farenheight. a large dust storm has rolled in over landing platforms C4-G6. caution is advised.
I sighed. but after all, thats my life.

"Yeah, yeah. We'll be there around 2:00p.m. tomorrow. We're running a bit late because of maintenance. Tell your superiors to get us some better software than this piece of stuff they like to hand out." I grumbled as I ran a troubleshoot on the Aidos software. "Warning: DOZ 229 - Temperature Level Incline [Crew Quarters]" the screen flashed in a taunting fashion. "This is going to be a long loving day..." I sigh to myself.

I lay down on my cot, and opened the footlocker at its end. It held some dirty clothes, an old issue of Asimovs Science Fiction Journal, and a rusty, beaten-up terminal. I placed the terminal in front of me, and booted it up.

I swiftly typed out a poem about space. writing always made me feel better.

space dog days
we drink our wine from a corporate sattilite
we knock back our roostertails in geosynchronys orbit
we smoke weed captioned with the date
and US-eastern daylight time
to Sirus XM's '60s and '70s
mellow-rock the bridge playing
almost imperceptibly
and dream we still understand
what the space race was all about
as one down on the NASA channel
DISH earth on our TV package
shows to that music a view of a planet
over which an occulting shadow steals
almost imperceptibly

The voice came out loud through the barracks  intercom speakers. attention. we will be landing on mars in: 17 minutes, 42 seconds. please have your gear ready by the time we land

Oh, yay, space adventures. Just a quick question: What's the "Daudelus"? Is it just a ship you guys made up?

Anywho, might as well fill out a character sheet:

I walked through the clean, well-lit hallways of the combat station Second to None. I had heard that the transport ship Daudelus would be docking with us shortly; it would be good to see some of the crew from that ship. I figured I might as well get my gear, maybe I'll manage to tag along with a ground crew. I've been looking forward to heading down to Mars.

I round a corner, entering the hallway with the crew's rooms. I see a few of the senior officers talking. I nod to them and resume walking. I stop as I hear one of them say, "Hey, Axio." I turn around to face him. They commonly called me Axio, since "Axiometra" is a real mouthful. "Need something?" I ask casually.

The senior officer chuckles. "Hoping to tag along with a ground crew, aren't you?" He asks jokingly. I reply simply: "Take a guess." One of the others joins in, "Ha, good luck with that." I look at him. "Good luck with your promotion."

I turn to leave as he stands there, looking blank.

We were only a few hours away from docking but I was persistent to solve the issue rather than letting those crappy tech guys down at StN touch my baby. stuff software or not the Daudelus will always be my ride. Suddenly I realized something. "Kyle come over here!" I call over my friend, "I think I found the issue. It's not an internal error. We're getting a relay from an older version of Aidos software. It was a glitch back in 2.01.1 that used long range relays to remotely control ship functions but was discontinued from the series due to interference with other version of Aidos. This signal could perhaps be..." Kyle abruptly cuts in, "I don't need your life story. English please?" I look towards him, "Well standard ships are always provided with the latest software and the signal is reading with the 2.01.1. In other words, we're not alone out here."
