Author Topic: Jorici Vs. Fredulus: computer build race! Jorici's to-build update!  (Read 3240 times)

Fredulus and I decided to compete at building a computer. Who's computer will be able to run GTA 4 first?

Jorici

Gathering Stage = Finding the right parts for a moderate to good computer.
Work Stage = Gaining money, will post results. (Longest stage?)
Purchase Stage = Buying and getting products delivered
Building Stage = Building the PC
Testing Stage = CAN IT RUN GTA 4 AND DID I BEAT FREDULUS?

I recently acquired a new computer for use at my mom's house.

Original specs:
Single Core AMD Athlon 2.0 GhZ
383 MB of RAM
200GB HDD
Integrated Nvidia 6100 SE, 256 MB of Video RAM

So these are the upgrades I plan on/have made:

Added:
4/3/11: Added an ATI Radeon 4650

Plan on adding:
Cooler Master HAF 922M
Intel Core i5-760 Quad Core
Corsair Dominator 1333MHz 4GB Memory
Asus P7P55D Motherboard
EVGA 470 GTX
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12
Corsair SSD F60
Corsair TX750
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

Any suggestions? Also, the size of the case is about 1 foot high by 2 feet long.

Fredulus

^Fred's Computer: Dell OptiPlex GX620

Original Specs:
Pentium 4 HT 3.4Ghz (1 physical core, 2 cores with hyperthreading enabled)
2Gb of RAM
80Gb HDD
Windows XP

Finished Upgrades:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Planned Upgrades:
Wireless Adapter (no internet yet, sadface)
Radeon HD 4670
2 more gigs of RAM (total 4Gb)
Either a 1TB HDD or two 500GB drives in RAID-0 configuration for more speed

A lot of the things I upgrade it with (HDD, wireless adapter, things like that) I'll use when I finally build my real computer.

I have enough money to buy ONE item for it. Should I go for Windows 7, or a RAM upgrade?

I was also looking at this.

i was going to say "i bet my stuffty computer is stufftier than your stuffty computer!"
then i saw 383 mb ram o.0

and W7 can't even run on that much RAM, so get RAM first

as for that mobo, make sure that case uses ATX motherboards. some prebuilt computers use hella weird mobos.

What is the minimum required?

Also, how do I find out what type of RAM I have? I think it is DDR1.

What is the minimum required?

1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

what are you using?

If your using windows 98 then GET WINDOWS 7!
If it's XP or something, buy ram.

Why would he have Windows 98? It's ancient history.

383 MB of RAM
AHAHAHAHAHAAHA!

Windows 98 isn't bad.

Oh I almost forgot the OS! It's Windows XP. I don't like it much, it makes the computer feel clunky, even if it was really fast. I prefer streamlined Vista or Seven.

Use readyboost on it then.

Just found out, It's DDR RAM.

No one is laughing at the single core 2GHz processor?

I agree. XP feels so awkward, who gives a stuff if it runs faster (and not even noticeably faster, at least on my stuffty computer).
