Author Topic: The Surface V2 - Nuclear Wasteland Survival  (Read 5412 times)

The year is 2146. The Americans are quickly approaching Moscow, during a resource war during the global energy crCIA. No one knew exactly what happened next, but pretty damn soon the world will be changed forever. Several nuclear warheads, BBC London claimed there were around 50, were launched at the United States. The United States quickly detected the warheads, and retaliated with around 230. Automated Nuclear Threat Alert System, or ANTAS, gave off a shrill warning to the denizens of the U.S. - death was approaching. The pre-recorded sirens blared, "Alert: Alert: Nuclear Threat detected, please head to your designated fallout shelters. Alert: Alert."The rich people who could afford a spot went right to the shelter, while others who were less fortunate, sought shelter in mine shafts. The biggest one, which belonged to the Citadel Mining Company, had a lead-lined elevator and a lead-lined door that sealed off from the inside. The elevator would go down 2,000 feet, and then about 40 miles of walking through caverns, which all forked, turned, etc. Miners and civilians alike all trudged down the path. Suddenly, the very Earth shook with the fore of the atomic bombs, and then the halls of the mine fell silent as they continued walking. Their previous way of life, everything that they had ever known, was gone.

Eventually, they reached a large opening, about 800 feet high and a mile wide. There was a small underground river that stopped about 300 feet from the end of the cavern. The river stretched on and on in the blackness the other way, howerver. Strange plants were growing there, seemingly without sunlight. They figured out that these were edible. Civilization began to flourish in the next 50 years, as the miners used their tools to chisel out living quarters. But what used to be their lives was not forgotten.

After 150 years of living in the confined space, humans began to devolve. The stories of The Surface were scarce, but some were popular, like water falling from the sky. Of course none of that was true, how could that work? Soon enough, they decided they needed a leader. A king. The Howel family - the best miners in their little area, were chosen to become the royal family. The kings that followed were horribly corrupt, and even killed almost everyone in the northern living quarters of what was now called, "The Citadel" after the founders of the mine shaft.

Now the year is 2589. Humanity is dying out under there, and people began to set out to find the preacher's promised "holy land", with green plants, water that fell from the sky, peace, and equality. Many of them did not return. A large group of explorers, known as the "Conquistadors", will set out to find this holy and in a last, desperate attempt to save humanity underground.

The Cars

These were not your ordinary trucks. Back in 2072, the need for a better fuel was massive. So, after years of testing, the scientist found out something prime for a combustion engine: Sodium Hydrochloridiane. The only drawback is it is delivered in cores and is explosive once exposed to oxygen. That is the only reason the ancient trucks are still running and did not run out of fuel.

Except it takes fossil fuels to make these vehicles, so expect VERY few.

Yellow: Federation of the Gulf(FoG) controlled areas
Red: Republic of New England(RNE) controlled areas
Blue: Commonwealth of Michigan(CoM) controlled areas
Orange: No man's land

The RNE and CoM have been at war for years over territory. The RNE are masters of flight, and sea travel, whilst the CoM have supreme land vehicles. The RNE has a much larger active military, and have control of both the pacific and the atlantic ocean. The FoG are pretty neutral, but they may enter the war on the CoM's side, then leave soonafter.

Pink: Mines
Yellow: Airfields
Red: CoM installations
Black: Trade routes

You don't have to be in Illinois, but that's where the citadel is, so that is where I will be. You also may have more than one character.

You will now assume the role of the explorers, or just anyone from the story.

I gaze at my newly made knife. That blacksmith is good. He can smith anything I ask him, including this knife, which has a picture engraved of the citadel on it. It said, "Ad Astra", which meant, to the stars in latin. No one really knows what a star is, but ancient books have mentioned them, as some form of peace or a state of mind, or something like that.

As I flipped through pages of the presumably 2009 history book, most pages burned,I learned about many past things. After I saw that every other page had been burned to ashes,I put the book in my satchel and went out to the mines.

I was following along in the story great. Then you lost me on the second paragraph. I NEED AN EXPLENATION D:

I see a man reading a history book, sitting on a stone slab. I got angry. I walked up to him, and I smacked the history book out of his hand.
"Well, what did you do that for?" He asked me. "You know those aren't real - there is no such thing as other worlds, or "motor" carriages - that's all fictional. Don't you believe it for one second. I hate the amount of people who read that stuff and trust it." I shout. I pick up the book, and stuff it in my pocket.

"Everybody, calm down. The earth is collapsing in places, but we tell you, there IS a solution!" I finished up my speech. Then there was absaloute pandamonium. The earth started rumbling, then I felt such an extreme falling I almost blacked out. I was sent flying when the huge 100x100 mile square fell down into the earth. I landed slumped up against a building, while I was in the air, I heard lots of screams, then they stopped, and then I blacked out against the building

"Good. Don't believe it for a second. It is just bullstuff that the kings before ours wrote. He even declared that himself." I said to the man, really frustrated at his response. He swung at me. I barely dodge it, and an officer yells, "Stop!", and sprints over to us. The man tries to explain what happened, how I stole his book and whatnot, but the officer picked up a baton and beat him in the gut with it. The man hunched over in pain, and fell to the floor. The officer simply smiled, and said, "Have a nice day." and then spat on the man.

it had taken months of extensive reaserch, but Roger thought he might have found a genuine way to the surface, the promised land. it was quite simple logic, really. the men who origannly built the complex had to come down somehow, and on this concept, he had discovered old blueprints for a device known as an "elevator.". supposedly, it was a machine that operated a pulley, which was attached to a small booth. when activated, the machine would activate the pulley, bringing the booth up. the hard part was locating one. it had taken a while, but Roger had found one of the origional maps of the complex. it showed a lable that read "El--t-or" ink splotches blooted out the rest, but he was certain that it stood for elevator. along with the blueprints was an instruction maunual detailing how to repair an elevator. having assembled the proper tools, roger was ready to set out on the journey of a lifetime.

I felt a heavy baton thrust upon my back as I flailed into the dark room, the sound of the door shutting behind me. "Fix it." a voice commanded from outside the room. It was the king's voice. They knew my skills that my ancestors had passed down to me. They wanted to exploit it but to keep it as a secret as well. I walked up to the rusting computer and began to open the case. I could feel eyes staring in wonder from behind the tinted window as they watched me work. Within an hour I had the soft hum of the computer running with the blinking cursor on the black screen of the lit computer.

The door opened once more and as a reward I was butted in the face with a gun and they began to drag me to another room for their research. People need to know the truth. I need to escape. Somehow...

I'm going to completely re-write the backstory soon since it is utter stuff.

it left me going "what the hell does this mean?"
