Author Topic: LAPTOP VS DESKTOP THE ULTIMATE DECISION!  (Read 2405 times)

Hia thar. I currently have a really stuffty iMac with 200GB of hard drive space, 1GB of memory, and some kind of really old processor. Point is, it sucks. Sucks for my needs at least. It's my family computer and everyone else doesn't have a problem with it. But I do. I take up about 98% of its power and space and I have to use it for most of the day for my homework and things of that sort. So everyone in my family complains about me using all day. It is clear to see that we need to get another computer in the house and my dad agrees as well. He works constantly all day as well and he sticks with his Mac PowerBook that he has had for longer than we had the iMac. He is fine with his computer as well. But he knows that I need a computer of my own, for schoolwork, gaming, design, photography, video editing, etc. But his argument is that I should get a really good laptop and not a desktop. But I disagree with him and really want a beast desktop that I mashed together for about $1800. My friends say that they use their desktops 95% of the time they use one of their computers, so I figured it's the way to go. But I would like to hear the Blockland community's opinion. If you had to choose between a desktop or a laptop as your first real personal computer, which one would it be?

What one did you type that very long post with?

My iPod touch XD

And would also like to point out that I am a student in high school and my dad claims that a laptop would aloe me to bring it anywhere I want. But rarely do I need a computer at school because throughout the whole building we have about 50 desktops and 40 netbooks that are available to use whenever we have a free period. The only other possible place that I would bring a computer is my friends house or with me on a trip to Canada. :3

This also means you can now get robbed anywhere you want.

This also means you can now get robbed anywhere you want.

It also means you can now wish that you could play any decent games without it chugging at 10 FPS.
You can't even play Dwarf Fortress properly on a laptop, get a desktop.

Don't buy a prebuilt though, ship the parts individually and put them together yourself, the forums can help you choose what parts to buy if you need help with it

It depends on your needs. Desktops are cheaper for the power you get, but not convenient to take with you. If you have the need to take your computer with you, the laptop is an obvious choice.

Personally, I'm considering buying a new laptop simply for things like programming and school work and then having my desktop used solely for playing games.

Laptop.
It has feet and it walks.

He said he's willing to spend $1800. That is easily enough to get a laptop which can run any game which is out now at high graphics settings, at least.
On the other hand, $1800 on a desktop can get you much more, and personally, I don't think spending that much money on a desktop is worth it, seeing as you can build very powerful desktops for much less than that.

Why get a laptop though, if you don't travel often and don't need one? I say desktop.

I don't get that. But when I get back on my iMac I will give you guys the specs, models, and pricing on the laptop and desktop that I could possibly buy.

Depends, if you have a social life among gamers, and plan on attending lan parties and such, then go for it, grab the laptop, or go with a micro-atx computer. If you have no social life, and just sit on your ass all day, then get the desktop. The forums are pretty tech savvy, so I gurantee you we can get you a better computer than what you found for $1,800 if you're comfortable with putting it together, that is.

I wouldn't mind building a computer for less. But first give me a moment to get to my iMac to show you guys the specs I'm talking about. They are quite dirty. :3

Trust me, I can find you a computer filthier than African drinking water for $1,000

Oh God lol. XD I'm sure you could, I would just imagine though that because I do not understand that much about hardware I would have difficulty constructing it. I mean, is it kind of like a puzzle where you just attach everything together and your done?

To be completely honest, no.

Building a computer is hyped up by some people to be difficult as forget, but its actually really easy, and if you need to, you always have direct access to youtube. The most difficult part in all honesty is the small cable connections for the power button and stuff, but just look at your mobo/cases instruction manual and you're good.

And stuff, if you doubt yourself, call a computer store around you and they'll gladly do it for you.
