Author Topic: Do you think nuclear power is a good, or bad, thing?  (Read 5729 times)

Well, im curious. Some people are, some aren't, and I was interested in whether you think it is or isn't and why.

just for those of you living under a rock: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power

I think it is a good thing, not a permanent solution but a temporary one at the least.

I just found this pic of two of Chernobyl's workers standing on the lid of unit 3.

Kind of amusing for me.

It's clean, efficient, and safe.

So I approve of it.

Better than some things.

It provides a stuff ton of power, without polluting the environment, and is perfectly safe. We need more of them, but that isn't going to happen because the media just has a loving orgy when one goes "worst possible case scenario" and smears the image of the entire industry. Chernobyl was a case of irresponsibility and failure to follow protocol, Three Mile Island was an outdated and under maintained plant, and Japan's most recent one was hit by a loving earthquake (protip: Don't build these things on loving FAULT LINES).

-snip-

don't forget another crucial thing: Chernobyl was poorly designed. It used a loving RBMK reactor, which is a cluster forget of stupidity.

No one ever digs deep enough before throwing a fit over an accident.

What's that and how is it stupid?

Nuclear power had lots of potential, but irresponsibility and the need to make money over safe facilities caused lots of issues.

What's that and how is it stupid?

graphite moderator, which is the dumbest thing anyone could ever do. Graphite moderators have only caused problems, which was also shown at the Windscale accident in the 50's, and graphite tipped control rods. When inserted, they did the opposite of what they should do: They spiked the power for a few seconds instead of dropping it, which is what also partially contributed to the accident. Even worse, no reinforced containment building.

RBMK

PWR (most popular design)

one reason why TMI wasn't a cluster forget like Chernobyl was because the radiation was contained in the dome.

You're probably not serious, but that's a coal plant.

Not very relevant, but I hate it when people pronounce nuclear as "new - cyew - ler" instead of "new - clee - er"

I don't understand any of this so I'm just going to nod my head and say okay.

Doesn't look clean or safe.
