The minecraft megathread gets ~200 posts per day, which is enough to bury a question with other worthless stuff in under an hour.

No, you cannot.

You also do not have dynamic water or lava.  There are also no mobs, redstone, rails, Nether, and various more things.

At one point before buying Minecraft I thought classic was so much better just due to the fact that it was solely about creating and not surviving.  I solved that problem by just hosting a server with no mobs and using /give, or the TooManyItems mod.
