LA Noire is a wonderful detective game, not so much on the action side (but it can be at times, chases, shoot outs and such).
Do not expect it to be like GTA. It is a free roaming game but you do not go around blowing up cars and running over pedestrians.
I'd personally give it a 8/10 rating.

I'm getting L.A. Noire soon, but how does the game stop you from running over pedestrians and stuff

If you havent, just get the expansions for Reach and Black Ops. Black Ops Mappacks are actually good in detail, and more challenging, in my opinion.

Every single pedestrian is coated in multiple layers of butter and jump out of the way with their loving spidy-senses.
You can hit people if you try hard enough though. It's very satisfactory once you're able to make some lady fly off the hood of your car when you're working for the LAPD.

Well if you want a criminal game, play GTA IV or Saint's Row II
If you are looking for detective games play LA. Noire. 7.5/10
