Author Topic: Fraps?  (Read 2644 times)

Should I buy fraps? I have always wanted to record game commentary, but don't have the softwear to record.

Pros:
*I get to do something I enjoy
*I have a good program that I can use often
*I have stuff to tweet about
*I finaly get my youtube channel started
*I can do something with my life
Cons:
*It cost $37, meaning I would have about 70 left in my bank account. Good number, but I'm greedy.
*No one will probly view my videos, so that can be a waste.
*Spend more time playing video games.

So, what do you think?

I bought it. Its good.

All you need to do is make good videos and have a good editor.

For starters, it's "software" :cookieMonster: just saying.

Second, you really need a good computer to use FRAPS effectively.  Low-end computers will suffer tremendously with FRAPS recording.  Medium-range computers will have to tone the settings down a bit.  If you have a really great computer, by all means, feel free.  The same applies with laptops, except for the fact that high-end laptops may also need to tone settings down a bit depending on the game and laptop and the usual for medium and low-end.

FRAPS eats the living hell out of your processor, RAM, hard drive and GPU combined all together.

  • Processor - Compresses the video if you set it to do so, records audio.
  • RAM - Not so much as the others, but if you have a low amount of RAM (anything less than 4GB) you will have problems with decent framerate.  I have 6GB, which is plenty.
  • Hard drive - If your hard drive runs slower than 7200 RPM inside, you're going to have framerate problems because FRAPS pretty much records the screen and writes it to the hard drive.  Solid states, although incredibly expensive now for large sized ones, will help you a LOT.  You also need a lot of hard drive space, depending on how long you record for, the quality in framerate per second, and the size you are recording in (half size or full size, and your resolution).
  • GPU - (graphics processing unit, makes pretty pictures) You need at least a medium-end GPU.  Again, FRAPS records every single frame that your graphics card renders for whatever game.  If you can't play the game on lowest settings at 20 FPS, you're going to have extreme difficulty getting a good clip out of that game.  Plus, a high-end graphics card will let you play the game on the highest settings which in turn makes your video look nice because that's the prettiest the game can be.

All in all; powerful computer? don't worry.  low-end computer? don't buy it.  not sure?  do research or don't buy it.

What's a good (cheap) editor?

None.

The good ones cost money.  In the 100s.

If you have Windows XP, you still have Movie Maker.  Unfortunately I don't think it can save movies into high definition, i.e. 480p or higher.

1. Buy Fraps
2. make youtube account
3. Test Fraps
4. ?!?!?!?!
5. Profit.

My Movie Maker broke big time long ago, nothing loads into it. Overall, it sucked to make movies anyway. Try Camtasia Studio.

I bought Fraps like 6-7+ years ago when I played Halo CE only. My low end computer does have terrible problems using it, now. I made a YouTube video and decided to use the recording lag to make it a scary video. It failed, but meh.

Get BandiCam instead, uses less resources and can also record desktop, not only games.

Making a single video can get you views, make more, set up stuff like videostreams etc., which is actually free..
Why is that bad?

None.

Windows Vista & 7 have a free Movie Maker which can save in 1080p.

Your pros outweigh your cons. Buy it.

This is Windows Live Movie Maker.

As you can see, it has no timeline for any decent editing because Microsoft thought it was "too complicated for users".  It is now autism friendly!

This makes me glad that I have a copy of Vista with the old movie maker. What was Microsoft thinking when they made that piece of stuff?

Of course, you would've known that if you read my post.
