Author Topic: Graphics don't make a game.  (Read 1708 times)

Go look up Extra Credits, They cover this whole thing. I believe the video is called asthetics and cosmetics or something.

Minecraft does have good graphics though. All the shaders and stuff make it look good.
Also graphics matter a little to me. I can't play a game that has graphics capable of melting your eyes out.

Perfect example is Cortex Command.

It looks like something a souped up SNES could play, but in actuality, it's the best 2D side-scrolling shooter of all time(IMO).

I swear we had a thread that was exactly like this. I think Bisjac might have even posted around the same thing.

Holy loving balls.

Graphics are important.  Unless it uses an interesting art direction.

Minecraft uses an interesting art direction.

BF3 looks like love.  It does not use an interesting art direction, it just makes you feel like a rocket just exploded in front of you.

Different, yes, but both amazing games.
I would say they are important, but not as important as the actual game.

"graphics" are important in a game as they help guide the player and give them a sense of the atmosphere and emotion of the game.
So yeah, graphics in a sense of eyecandy or reasoning, they are important.

people who think graphics are all about "uber leet AA and super osem tectures" are the morons. eghghnae

This "friend" of mine is going insane over how Halo 4's graphics are great. He refuses to accept that graphics don't determine gameplay.

i just play any game if i like it

no matter how bad the graphics are

Well talking about a game like Minecraft, the graphics are among the most astoundingly beautiful I've ever seen. The textures are what gives the game a sort of 8-bit vibe that some people like. Your friend merely has textures and graphics confused.

Graphics don't make a game good. I'll play a game that has graphics that make it hard to distinguish from real life, or a game with graphics that will make your average CoD player vomit. It doesn't matter to me.

The one, most important thing about any game: Your ability to play it.

ontopic: truly it's their opinion and you just have to get over it

i think i dumbed Man 2's quote down a bit c:

or a game with graphics that will make your average CoD player vomit.
In retrospect, I seem to be labeling CoD players as graphics snobs. Forget I said it.

Seriously, I mean who cares if you can't see sweat drops in detail on a characters face, or if there aren't enough petals on a flower that is scenery. Games with good graphics look nice, but that doesn't mean you should only play games with good graphics.

Depends on the game

If you were to put the MW concept into a TF2 graphics, it wouldnt work. Same thing vice versa.

It depends mainly on the game. Minecraft has pretty amazing graphics (And you can improve/modify them to make them more realistic or to your liking) and so does Battlefield 3. Im not gona say "That game sucks" because they forgot to make a guy sweat or seem wet after a torrent of rain. It truly depends on the game

Now, on the COD series where MW2 had pretty awesome graphics and when BO came out it lowered the graphics, now thats what made me not like that game that much.
