Hearts of Iron starts in 1936 and ends in 1947, so i'd say it's based around WWII

Its a good series of games, but Age of Empires is just not what I would consider.....an rts game because its basically a Civilization building game.
Then they build masses of units and just send them all to attack, then watch everything burn.
