So I dug out an old Intel computer with Windows XP, hooked it up to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. And when I power on it loads the main welcome screens, the screen goes dark, leaving me with a black screen and a movable cursor. What to do???

Volko you're alive!

And for some reason my computer does this right before the login screen, but only for about five seconds.
How long did you wait it out?

It's literally still doing it as I type this.  It has been for a good hour.  Nothing I do makes it stop, but the cursor is movable and occasionally when I click it it beeps.

Try booting in safe mode. Apparently this even happens in Vista and 7 sometimes, the solution was to re-install the OS as it might be damaged.

On a side note, I even had a similar problem with OSX. Leads me to believe if any operating system is damaged in some way, it might have trouble getting to the login screen. Just a crazy theory though lul.

Sounds like either the computer is really, really clogged up with a bunch of stuff and the computer is slow, which means it has to take a long as hell time to get going or your OS is damaged.

Just found out, it doesn't even have an original OS.  Not even XP.  Gonna sift through a stuff ton of programs and try and find an OS disc.

It's an OmniPro.  Just that, with Intel Pentium 4.  No OS.

Ubuntuuuuu~

Don't you have any OS disks?
I have a Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP and Windows Vista within arms reach. Always handy.

By the way, you wouldn't be getting a cursor if it had no OS. A cursor is part of an OS, not the computer BIOS or anything.

Wouldn't it say "No operating system found" if you have no OS?

If you can't find the OS thing, burn Ubuntu onto a disc or something.
