Author Topic: Quick Question About Motherboard RAM Slots  (Read 615 times)

I'm about to get a motherboard, and I noticed that it has 2 DDR2 slots and 2 DDR3 slots. If I have 3GB of DDR2 and 4GB of DDR3, will that show up as 7GB total, or only use DDR2/DDR3?

It'll show up as 7 GB (I think) but I don't see why you're going to buy two different values of RAM, it just doesn't look right.

I currently have 3GB of DDR2 RAM in my PC right now, but with only 2 slots DDR2. I'm upgrading, and keeping the old RAM because of my budget.

Another question: It says the maximum memory supported is: 8GB(DDR2) / 8GB(DDR3), meaning I can get 16GB total, right?
EDIT: one more question, should I get 1 4GB stick, or 2 2GB sticks and have room for possible upgrade with 1 more DDR3 slot left? Will I have performance loss compared to 2x2GB?

Mixing stuff in technology is a bad idea, sure it may be harmless, but its still not reccomended. There's a whole list of reasons, but I'll just leave it with don't do it.

Check if your computer is 64bits or 32bits. I suppose it's 64bits, if it's not, you won't be able to run just up to 3GB of RAM.

64 bit Windows 7, of course.
