Author Topic: I'm no longer confused and quite content: The story of a man and his laptop  (Read 4637 times)

Hey guys, as the title states I need to get some advice about a problem. More so, I need to just vent a bit because I feel like I'm going to let it out another way that I might regret.

The story goes like this: Around last December (or January, my memory and sense of time suck), due to various circumstances I will not be fully disclosing (it's uncomfortable to discuss), my laptop was confiscated by my father. I haven't spoken to him since (due to circumstances not directly related to the laptop confiscation, but rather how he acted before he did so), and about a month ago my mom said she'd ask him to return it. I inquired about it again this afternoon, and she said my father would be returning it "soon".

I'm getting very, very impatient. Those of you who know me know I'm a computer junkie and a huge geek, and the only computer access I've had is relatively rare use of a very old desktop I've affectionately nicknamed "the Precambrian Dust-box". The release of internet on the 3DS was a huge relief (I'm posting from it right now). I've drawn frequently when inspiration is there, but I rather dislike drawing with physical mediums. I've read several books and graphic novels. I've exhausted my video game collection at least once over. I'm essentially out of things I enjoy to do, and until I get a job (I've applied for several) I've got a lot of free time.

My laptop was taken when I was 17, but I'm now 18. The laptop was purchased with my mom's credit card, but I gave her the money for it. I would assume there are some laws about this whole thing, but I'd rather leave that as a last resort.

I'm not sure what to do here. Along with my patience running as thin as tissue paper, I'm wondering what my father is doing with my laptop. Is he erasing my hard drive? Bugging it? Putting some sort of keylogger on it? Call me paranoid, but it's driving me crazy. Why would he want to hold onto it just a little longer after this long? I've got a few text messages in my drafts folder demanding he return my laptop without any damage to it immediately, worded in different ways. I don't know if I want to send one or not. I'm also very inclined to drive to his house tomorrow and just tell him to give it back myself. I guess the best course of action is wait, but every day I worry about what's going on.

ugh

tl;dr - I hate my dad and he won't return my laptop and I'm going crazy. Help me, smart people and internet lawyers!

I hope I don't sound mean.
but the reason he took it was research, i'm guessing?

He said he wouldn't rather discuss it.

If he does anything with it, you could probably take him to small claims court. Installing a keylogger or bug is illegal, so if you wanted to, you could use it against him.

Cat research?

You got caught watching research. heheh

Drive over to him, ask him politely if he would return it.
If not, ask him nicely why he won't return it now.

just take it, or move out and take it.

I will say it was not research.

Worst advice ever.
Have you really talked to your mom about it, and what you might do to fix it?

I will say it was not research.
Were you researching that "how to kill your father in 7 easy steps" book? Because that's a no-no, bro.

If you payed for it, and you're 18 now, he, by law, cannot take that from you.
Sue him.

and lulz you were caught masturbating, or he found research, huh.

He probably is just keeping it longer because he's reluctant to give it back. Remember he's doing what he thinks is best for you, even if he might not be right.

You're going to college right? You'd have plenty of computer access there.

Suing your own family isn't very smart when they're providing you your house and feeding you.

I don't know how to help you unless you tell us why it was confiscated. But you obviously don't want to do that, so I guess sorry I can't help.
