Dad put the two prongs through the horizontal slots, does that not work? Does this mean I will have to buy a new adapter?

I live in New Zealand, I'm not sure there would be a lot of American plugs here...

Your adapter probably doesn't work. You have to remember that the outlets are not only different physically but also likely carry different voltages.
