roms aren't illegal "unless"...

you pretty much have to be more specific if someone is going to know if you are breaking the rule or not.

-so far the law tells us that we can have 3 copies for our 1 payed legit one.
a physical, a software, and a backup(not specified)
-we dont have to make our own copies or backups of our originals to qualify.

granted half these laws were in place in the early digital industry, and before the net matured. they had no way to know how this media would work.

The PS1 is so old that you can get the Roms for free. You can get Roms for basically any old console for free nowadays. I have loads of Snes Roms which I downloaded for free, and you can even get DS Roms for free.

EDIT: Removed the crap about the illegal stuff about DS Roms being able to play on the actual DS

abandonware is not freeware.

abandonware is like..... the industry "implies" that it dont matter what you do to that software, because its a long forgotten name and isnt earning money anyways.
technically its not ok, and the company can go lawsuit happy on everyone, but its pointless and they ignore it.

if for some reason the old game got a lot of hype, like from some mod community that took interest in it, and they thought there was still money to be made in selling the game, they could come back to claim rights.
or if the franchise sold to new developers, and they made a 10 year later sequel, they could claim rights on the old game just out of name property.

its ok to download what is common sense declared as "abandonware" but its a loose term that isnt determined by anyone but us browsing google for it. and may suddenly become not ok the second the owners of the franchise decide.
