TF2 not working?

When I try to launch TF2, it just says "Preparing to launch TF2..." for ages; has it starting from before dinner and it still hasn't started yet. What is causing this? Do I have to redownload?

It's not my pc, it has run well for 2 years straight.

delete tf2 folder in steamapps/usename

start tf2 and it will recache all the files again and will fix anything thats wrong
