Author Topic: Minecraft Trying to break into my bank account?  (Read 3008 times)

So, I went to go register for minecraft and I get to the end and everything seemed normal. A standard checkout. Then, they asked for the last four numbers of my social-security card. Wtf. I didn't end up buying it but can anyone explain to me why Minecraft is asking for my freaking social-security number. I love the game and would appreciate it a LOT if someone can help me figure out why and maybe a different site to where I can purchase the premium account.
I ended up using MasterCard and it worked without scam attempts. I'm good now.

You probably got redirected because of a virus or clicked on a false link.

I scan my computer daily. And I just did.

Or you tried buying from a 3rd party website.
Protip: Don't do that

so where exactly does it ask for your ss#?

i made a faux account to go through checkout, and got to this page before i could go no further because of course im not buying minecraft again

i see no request for your social

What site did you start buying it from? You should make sure you are on the legitimate site. I could easily imagine you seeing a "Buy Minecraft now!" advertisement on some site and going from there. Also, some virus check programs don't check all aspects. It might miss stuff like one attached to your browser which does bad redirects to fool you into thinking you're finishing some purchase with the information.

It went to moneybookers.com
Then it went to a page with the verified by Visa program but i never got that password it talks about. Then it wants my SSN. No.

I went to minecraft.net

what checkout did you use? and what bank are you? and what kind of card are you trying to use?

some of your banks require other identifying online, when you try to checkout at places.

im with wellsfargo, and it requests a password just for online use. and sometimes wants me to use my debit pin. and sometimes other personal info to confirm like birthdate

Aha. Found the damn bugger. Got the virus. Removed. There. Works now. I used a more in depth scan and got it.

Have you made any other purchases before...? Do you think it was only adding social security to the stuff it was stealing? For all you know, it got your credit card information before you stopped at the social security information page. Check to be sure.

I never did check out with Visa(The one that was trying to steal my SS#) I used MaterCard and it worked scam free. But yeah, I checked all credit card recent activity and just the Minecraft purchase. Same price as promised.
