Author Topic: Blocklands lighting  (Read 1763 times)

I have noticed recently that Blocklands lighting isn't very good, here is a example to show you what I mean by "isn't very good".

If you take a look at the left baseplate, I had built a couple of 1x1's around a light brick on a baseplate, and it turns out light goes further on a baseplate than on 1x1s. I have also noticed:
When standing on the side of a baseplate, the blockheads shadow isn't on the baseplate, but on the maps floor.
If standing on top of a missing 1x1f on a baseplate full of 1x1f's when using a light, the light only goes onto the 1x1's on the baseplate, and doesn't go onto the little hole that the blockhead is standing over.

Light doesn't seem to take a baseplate covered in bricks as a whole surface, and only lights the bricks individually.

Is there a way to fix the lighting? How hard would it be to do so? Would it ever be possible for bricks to make shadows?

I believe Eksi did a whole video on his aswell.

I really hope to see a new lighting system in the future.

I've noticed there is some remanence of brick shadows acting on the player shadow before. I don't think it'll be very easy or possible to make visible dynamics with light without it rendering every frame. I'm not sure though.

If you look closely you'll see what I mean. Using old image as example.

Player shadow falloff from where brick shadow would supposedly begin.

OOOH I've sat on that chair, in Dreads. :D

Offtopic: If you're interested, I changed the interior a few hours after your leaving.

The protruding tower is hollow and is there to add to the ambiance :3

Ontopic: Lets donate to Badspot so he can completely remake Blockland on a new Torque engine.

Blockland uses a vertex lighting system, which is why large objects are so ugly when being lit.

Am I the only person who would agree to wait 2 or 5 years for Torque 3d conversion?

I'll gladly wait for an engine update

I'm with you.
But by then, I would be in the military.

It's weird, the only light I like is orange light. In this picture, orange light is being used.

Orange is nice, its the most ambient, most warming, soft compared to the sterile whiteness of the player light, and the other lights are just novelty... who ever used purple? lol

I don't see why Badspot doesn't make a team to convert Blockland to Torque 3D... Also don't see why he doesn't advertise the game that much.

Yes!

And what we need is "Per Pixel Lighting".
Every modern DirectX 9 compatible graphicscard can do this in hardware.
per pixel lighting would also allow us to use bumpmapping for studs.

But howcome Badspot doesn't add it? :(

One never knows. He may be trying to implement it in Blockland as we speak, and implement it in the next update.
Or maybe not.
