Mod's with GUI's

Author Topic: Mod's with GUI's  (Read 5059 times)

i realize that you may get angry, but this is what this section is for.
What happened to GUI's? it seems very few of the mods released have GUI's and instead have you memorize a bunch of /commands. It gets frustrating being forced to memorize the otherwise useless information. could it be possible for some people who know how to perhaps band together and make GUI's for some of the more popular mods?

if a mod is serverside, the client will not automatically download a gui upon entering the server. therefore they will not be able to use the mod unless they have downloaded it from the forums themselves. chat commands prevent this.
also, if a chat command is made to be short and to the point, it shouldnt be that hard to remember.

Is it really that hard to open up a browser, click the Adress bar, enter a adress, click on the Add ons section, download and extract? i think not that entire process takes 4 seconds.

virtually no one is going to do this to use one measly mod on one server, and if you think otherwise, im telling you right now that you are wrong. if mods worked this way, no one would get to use them.

well i guess you rained on my parade fairly well lol. Fine, if no one wants to have GUI's i cant make you, its just a suggestion. BL will never have Fun, easy to use mod's because well have to memorize numerous /commands from every mod we play. Detailed mod's will be frustrating and more of a nuisance then a passtime, because well need to memorize around 30 commands for every detailed mod that will be made. Sounds like a fun, easy to use world *sarcasm*

we need a way to force-download guis from the server is what we need.

You are correct! this would be wonderful, and solve both problems.

This would be a massive security issue.

Sadly true because in this modern society of ours, people simply aren't trustworthy.
well... i guess this ship has sunk. if anyone else has any ideas please state them if you will, and please don't be nonsensical

You could provide both a GUI in your mod and /commands to use, or perhaps use the Force Download from Internet method described in another topic. (Search)

If you do use a force download have it download a clientside .cs file for executing the GUI, a keybind for opening it and any functions for buttons it may need to do clientside. Then tell whoever is joining and downloading it to leave once it's done, check that mod on the menu and rejoin.

What about a system where a mod is signed by (name of reputable person/modder/whatever here), the mod tells you who made the mod (maybe with their BL_ID to prevent forgery and fraud), and if you don't trust the person, it gives you the option to discard( or not download) the files in question.

Would this be an effective fix for the security hole?

I'm sure there's a way around this. I'm going to make a prototype GUI downloader to see how accurate it can get, and whether its 100% secure.

Can't you force people to download GUIs that make all of their buttons close the game?

Hence why Badspot called it a "massive security issue"... And thats not even the worst thing that could be done.

This is a little late, but, I think they need to make more GUI's with mods too.
