Author Topic: 1GB VRAM and 2GB VRAM - Main difference? (Read 1758 times)

So recently, I've seen epic gameplay versions with a good GPU I've been looking at. But, all of those videos are based off the 2GB VRAM version of the card, while I'm looking at the 1GB version.
What would be the main difference?

A bit of performance. If the price difference is large, then not worth it.

VRAM's major use is for texture storage and quick access to certain graphical aspects. For instance, instead of your computer running two miles to the nearest grocery store (HDD or normal RAM) for some chips (textures) it runs to the nearest gas station which is 1/4 of the distance (Your VRAM). The more VRAM you have, the more of these graphical aspects that can be stored.

Now in a realistic setting, the only thing you'd gain is a little performance like Nickelob said. In the long run though, you'd probably be better off with the 1GB version as it is more than likely cheaper (Unless you can afford the 2GB, then by all means go ahead.) The biggest thing about GPU's is their clock speeds. Might I ask some specifics on the card you're looking at?

Some games like GTA4 actually limit you based on your dedicated VRAM. 1GB should be fine but I have a 768MB GTX460, and GTA4 won't let me put shadows on very high because of my VRAM limit.

As Nick said, some games restrict your settings by your VRAM, but the difference isn't extremely substantial. :o
