There will always be various opinions on the matter.

Also, just get a fight over with with a punch to the solar plexus, I don't want to be known as some sort of punk.  Its not like a fight will decide your place in peoples minds unless that was the first time they saw you.

If I was in a fight at school (or with people I know from school), I would fight fair.

If I got randomly jumped by some stranger or someone broke into my home, I would do everything in my power to incapacitate them. And no, that's not a pusillanimous individual thing to do, because if some random stranger attacks you, they might be attempting to kill you. It's a smart thing to not want to be killed.
