Author Topic: Graphics vs. Aesthetics  (Read 1696 times)

I just saw this amazing video by The Escapist on what a true good-looking game is made from.

Now if companies focused on this and gameplay, I personally think that we'd end up with a lot better games.
So, what do the forums think?

All of this is very true.
And after I watched this I realized why some of the games I have played completely suck even with their high quality graphics.

Same here. Even with TF2's graphics being pretty low-medium quality, now I understand why I think TF2 looks better than most of the recent FPS's.

Two Worlds II

This is completely true and I have tried explaining this to my friends but they say im bullstuffting myself

I couldn't have put it better myself.

:D

I never really cared about graphics anyways .-.

The part where he said "as soon as we focus on aesthetics instead of graphics..." at the end is where it got a little iffy to me.
The average gamer is handicapped. They probably can't tell the difference between graphics and aesthetic. They just think more polys=more better.

But if he was talking to developers then I agree wholeheartedly.

I watched this when it came out, I bet you saw it when Notch tweeted about it. =P

All of those videos are designed more towards the developers.

I actually saw it on reddit and thought is was an amazing video.

that's why a game like minecraft is so popular, although it has bad graphics by default it sucks you into an environment that suspends your disbelief to the point where you feel like you're in the game. have you ever been spelunking a cave and screamed when a creeper attacked out of nowhere? that's because the game pulls you in. now, compare this with any of the older tom clancy games, those games have superior graphics but the surroundings are so god awful that you can't suspend your disbelief enough to have very much fun.

This was genuinely interesting. I've never viewed a game like this before.

This was exactly what I was thinking.

I sure hope Skyrim isnt solely based on graphics... (even though i know it wont be)
