You're comparing armor used in combat now to armor used in combat centuries ago as if there's actually a choice.

I also believe chainmail is still used today for people who dive and swim with sharks.

sharks don't normally attack, but if there's blood in the water, even from fish, they'll eat anything that moves, maybe if they think you're a seal, too.
