I was crouched and even if I were standing they still shouldn't be able to see me through a ceiling.

just roleplay yourself as the marked man, bearing a curse from birth! the curse makes people able to sense your presence and actions, revealing what you try to hide. this is the burden you bear, reminding you to keep a straight path of purity.
While line-of-sight was taken into account when sneaking in Fallout 3 and NV, Oblivion was an earlier game so Bethesda failed to take it into account when sneaking. Very detrimental to a successful theft in a populated area.
They had Marrowind and a bunch of other Elder Scrolls games to get it right
I hate not being able to sneak behind a wide pillar to escape the view of a patrolling guard.
thing is, I've alway been able to hide around corners without being seen.I don't know what is wrong for you guys.
that's not even hard to make into the game. just do a raycast search from the guard to the player, use trig to see if it is within peripheral vision, and check if anything is in the way. there could be a light detector too to see how dark it and factor that in.
