A in ASL = American. Since the primary american language is English, you would at least expect them to model their sign language after English.

I'm sure they did, but using hands to talk is different than using a mouth. Eh, I've never done much sign language so I don't know all the details.

Knowing how to READ it is completely different than knowing how to write it. I bet you can read all sorts of words, yet you probably can't spell them, if you're not looking at them.

Also, in regards to reading and hearing, I personally "hear" them in my head as I read. Furling doesn't know what that sounds like, so he can't. I'm not entirely certain what reading is like to him, but it's different than for you, or I.

Yeah and he's like 13 or 14, you know how difficult it is to get someone that age to sit down and dedicate hours and hours a day to memorizing grammatical structure and familiar phrases? He can't just hear them and instinctively recall them as he writes, he has to tediously memorize each and every expression and common word order in use today and he probably just wants to spend his summer playing video games like the rest of us.

If he ever wants to be taken seriously, yes, he will have to dedicate a bit of time to learning how not to sound handicapped.
Not only does being deaf not seriously impact how to learn to type (or at least you haven't proven otherwise) but he's constantly immersed in proper English communities.

I remember watching this one show where this girl's parents never talked to her and she had bare minimal communication with others and was unable to process conjunctions, adjectives, and all of that. You people who think Furling "knows a lot of English" probably don't know exactly how he processes typing a post. Also, do you people realize that when kids learn to read, most parents read along with their child and help them pronounce words from the book so they can recognize the sounds of letters when reading and therefore compare written words to the phonics of words that they hear from spoken language?
